They ruined it. What a colossal disappointment Squid Game is. I know a lot of people were disappointed with Game of Thrones back in the day. I guess I can now relate to how everyone felt in that situation, because that’s more or less how I feel right now. How you can create such a flop with such an insane budget is beyond my understanding. Where do I even begin…
So I wasn’t a fan of splitting the second season into two parts. It should technically be just one longer season - I think most would agree on that. The third season starts exactly where the second one ended, which is already a problem in itself. Why? Because it begins without the two strongest elements of the previous season. After the failed rebellion, Gi-hun becomes a shell of himself and barely even speaks, and the Front Man just puts his mask back on, and his only role now is to watch the remaining games.
What do we have then? Just the characters who survived. The problem is, they’re nowhere near as interesting as those from the first season. Some are just annoying, others are purely evil. There’s no depth and no attempt to make them compelling. It’s Squid Game, so obviously people die, but at this point it’s no longer shocking. Frankly, you just don’t care. Sure, there are some emotional moments, but you see them coming from a mile away. Sadly, it’s all extremely predictable.. 🤦🏻
The games are simplified too. Remember how Gi-hun managed to win the marbles game against 001? Yeah, forget about that. Instead, we get a game of hide and seek, where one team tries to escape a labyrinth and the other tries to chase and kill them. Like everything else this season, it’s simply lacking depth and has become a predictable, repetitive cliché. To make things worse, the VIPs reappear and they have more screen time than ever before. Somehow, they’re even cringier than they were in the first season...
Detective Hwang Jun-ho is still trying to find the island where the games take place. I won’t spoil it in case you haven’t seen it yet, but it’s embarrassing how useless that part of the story is. Unfortunately, I can say that it doesn’t get a satisfying conclusion. If you were hoping for some answers, you’ll surely be disappointed. The ending is quite a letdown too. I guess it’s not much of a spoiler to say that it’s not over yet - we’re getting Fincher’s Hollywood adaptation of Squid Game soon.
What the heck happened? Squid Game used to be an interesting commentary on capitalism and human morality. Now it feels like it became a victim of its own success. It’s well known that Hwang Dong-hyuk didn’t want to make a sequel, but money was the deciding factor. What an irony that a show about how people will do anything for money ends up becoming a cliché flop because of... money.
I'm sad and disappointed. The first season will always remain a masterpiece for me. The second season was alright but third one is just bad - lacking depth, missing answers and interesting characters, and losing their soul and purpose. It breaks my heart, but I’d rate it no higher than 5/10. Yikes!
Let me know what your thoughts are if you had a chance to see it already!
Kisses, hugs and flops 👎🏻
