Cinderella, the fairy tale originating from Charles Perrault's 1690's publication, was the first Disney movie released after WW2.
At the time, Disney was still a new company, having only made a few movies until WW2, which at the time were considered commercial failures other than Snow White. Later, upon re-release, Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Bambi gained traction as Disney classics.
But, back in 1950, Walt Disney recalled people stopping him on the street asking when he would release a new movie so that people could have the magic escapism that only Disney seemed to do.
Cinderella was chosen because Walt Disney had originally created cartoon shorts back in the 1920s based off her story. At the time, Disney used models to help the animators bring characters to life, and model the movements of a real human.
The same actress who was used as the model for Cinderella was the same one used for Sleeping Beauty!
When Disney World was built in the 1970s, Cinderella's Castle became the iconic view upon entering the park. While it was built large, and viewable in many areas of Magic Kingdom, they also employed a perspective to make it look even larger, modeling it after the behemoth castles of Poland and Germany.
