One of my favorite Disney movies, and my real-life nickname: Megara from Hercules. I loved this costume so much I couldn't decide which photos I liked, so I posted all of them!
The movie, released in 1997, was a different take than the films Disney typically released: it featured both the complicated nature of Greek mythology, and utilized a screwball-comedy style script.
If you're not familiar, screwball comedy was a popular style of film in the 1930s following the Great Depression. It was a more lighthearted take on film noir, often featuring a sexual woman with a more dominant role than seen in traditional relationships of that time, and a humorous battle of the sexes ensues.
Hercules, the son of Zeus and Alceme, is a "real" character from Greek mythology, but his love interest Megara was created by the Disney team. While her name is derived from Hercules first wife, she's intended to be a combination of his first and third wives from mythology, plus a secret sauce new to the recipe for Disney princess characters: Megara was given more wit, sarcasm and moral ambiguity. She's also physically depicted to have features a bit sharper than the other princesses, and intended to look like what pottery from Ancient Greece depicted.
Interestingly, Megara is a character thoroughly analyzed by the media at the time, generating some applause for her taking control and utilizing her sexuality to accomplish her goals, instead of men around her sexualizing her for their own gain such as what's seen in the Pocahontas, Jasmine and Esmeralda princess characters.
