Behind me is an antique velvet backdrop (late 1800s) used in funerals.
Way back in the day (or um, more precisely the late 1800s and early 1900s) if you lived outside of a major metropolitan area, there wasn't usually a funeral home nearby. Instead, the funeral would come to your home and set up these curtains behind the casket (which was typically set up on a table).
The curtains can raise to different heights, and there's a few different colors to choose from. It came in a huge, metal briefcase.
