Do I cover the ancient Easter Island, or the popular tiki bar Huki Lai of yesteryear? I love all things tiki and this pinup outfit I'm wearing (patterned after the 1940s playsuits of pinups) is the perfect outfit to wear (and take off) for a lesson tiki mugs.
I collect tiki mugs and summer is coming so we'll save the longer history lesson on Easter Island for another day.
So the Huki Lai was a popular tiki bar/polynesian-style restaurant in Louisiana in the 1960s. They had a big waterfall and served cocktails in tiki mugs like the one in my hand.
Tiki mugs, while modeled after ancient Polynesian statues or nautical themes, rose to popularity in the 1950s after WW2 when fascination with the South Pacific was at an all-time high. After a decade or two of popularity, tiki's cultural moment had passed and fell into obscurity until another resurgence in the 2010s. If you find vintage tiki mugs in your travels hold onto them - they're worth a lot!
