A 1960s chainstitched gym uniform. I can totally role-play as "Hotchick" (ok it actually reads "Harchick" but you get it) in this thing.
I read an interesting article the other day about the history of gym class in America. It started way back in the 1820s when men were the primary matriculated student body as a means to assure a healthy, fit population of men ready for war at any moment.
While men were the obvious intended audience for athletic classes, WW2 was a great example of women needing some amount of physical fitness as they filled the manual jobs that men (who had gone off to war) left behind for them to fill.
