A late 1800s pocket-sized copy of Evangeline, an 1847 epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow of two star-crossed lovers.

I told you a little bit about Cajun history last week and the French Acadians exile from the French territories of Canada into the swamps of Louisiana where "Acadians" shortened in translation to "Cajun."

Inspired by stories he heard of the time of the plight of the Cajuns, Longfellow constructed a tale of Evangeline and Gabriel who were separated and exiled on their wedding day, searching for each other in the swamps of Louisiana until they had grown old.

Longfellow is also the same guy who wrote the epic poem "Paul Revere's Ride" ("Listen my children and you shall hear the midnight story of Paul Revere...")
