It's nearly summer break and of course, you can't forget water safety!
The modern lifeguard was borne from the role of shipwreck helpers in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The role became more formalized (how to do mouth-to-mouth, ring buoys) into the early 1900s.
By around 1910, with the rise of boardwalks and swimming as a modern activity, lifeguards became a standardized role at beaches.
The red cross is actually an internationally-agreed symbol for lifeguards from the Geneva convention!
