Got my hands on some new tiki mugs and reminded me of this little number: one of my favorite photo sets.
A quick history on the grass skirts we associate for luaus and tiki:
Grass skirts became popular during the vaudeville era as Pacific Islanders began performing in the vaudeville circuit on US mainland. the fresh leaves they would typically be made with weren’t available so grass was used.
they became especially popular after WW2 with the rise in Tiki culture as (an Americanized and inaccurate) symbol of the allure of the South Pacific. 🗿🌺
(Apologies if you happen to have seen these photos before. If so I highly doubt you're complaining 🤭 For those worried I shaved off my bush, relax, these photos are from last summer.)
